Distillery Fact - Tobermory Distillery was originally founded in 1798 and at that time was called Ledaig. Being the only distillery on the island of Mull, it is located on the sheltered shore at the mouth of the fast-flowing Tobermory River. This is ideal for all its requirements – water, barley, fuel and the shipping of casks of whisky. Despite this it has had a checkered past spending almost as much time out of production as working, particularly up to 1990. Since Burn Stewart took over in 1993 Tobermory is known as an unpeated malt, and Ledaig as a heavily peated malt.
